Doug Mayfield, owner and president of Dryer Vent Wizard of Central Indiana, is also a licensed referee. For more than a decade, Doug would officiate countless basketball games, with his wife and three kids cheering him on from the stands. One of his sons, Preston, was always itching to help his dad referee.
In 2020, after watching his dad ref games for more than a decade, Preston took a class through the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), then became a licensed referee. He now officiates games with his dad as well as a number of other senior officials. Preston hopes to make a career out of officiating. He is one of the youngest licensed basketball officials in the state.
The father and son duo are thrilled to be able to bond and get exercise, all while being a part of their favorite sport. Doug currently coaches his younger son, Easton, a fourth-grader in the Brownsburg Junior Basketball League, and Preston is officiating, so it is truly a family affair.
